History of Architecture

Architecture, in a simple way, can be understood as the idealization of spaces for human living.

In its origin, with no precise date definition, it was dedicated to the search for spaces with protective characteristics against the harshest elements of nature, such as trees and natural caves. In a first phase, it consisted in the transformation of these same spaces and later in the reproduction of spaces with the same characteristics, in selected locations, using leaves, branches, trunks, and stones.

With the appearance of new materials, techniques, and ideas, the evolution was continuous. Historically, the the figure of the architect began in classical antiquity, with the first studies and treatises on architecture, being the work of Vitruvius the best known.

After a period of anonymity of the authors of architectural works, between the fall of the Roman Empire and the end of the Middle Ages, with the advent of the Renaissance, the author of the architectural work regains increasing importance until the institutional definition of our days.

Contemporary architecture is an activity that uses knowledge from a wide variety of disciplines integrating areas of study from the artistic, where architecture itself is inserted, to the exact and social sciences; in order to find the best solution to the objectives and needs of the space to be designed. Where, in a generic way, the best interconnection is sought in the dualities public/private space; form/function and aesthetics/comfort.

Main branches of architecture

In the architecture activity we can find specialized branches that seek to respond to specific situations in the construction area.

Urbanism

Large-scale architecture where areas of the urban layout are planned from sets of buildings inserted in clusters, such as Baixa Pombalina or the Olivais neighborhood in Lisbon, or even a complete city like Brasilia in Brazil.

Landscaping

Architecture of outer space where biology is a fundamental discipline.

Rehabilitation

It is of growing importance in two fundamental aspects: the museological rehabilitation of buildings or groups of buildings considered historically relevant, and the housing rehabilitation aiming at improving the healthiness and habitability conditions of old and/or degraded buildings.

Naval and Aviation

Their main activity is the exploration of the potentialities of the sea and space.

There is also an indispensable collaboration with the various engineering specialties, where the scientific component acquires an almost exclusive importance.
Arq. Pedro Carvalho

Metathesis projects have a strong architectural and engineering component. Architect Pedro Carvalho is responsible for most of our projects.

Our collaboration started in 2004, continuing regularly until today, consisting mainly in the rehabilitation and remodeling of buildings and housing spaces.

Depending on the specificities and objectives to be achieved, we use the knowledge of professionals in different areas, from the search and acquisition of the space, through the entire process of intervention, design and construction, to the final phase of exploitation or sale.

“Less is more” (Mies van der Rohe) and “Less is boring” (Robert Venturi). I don’t think the choice has to be between minimalism and exuberance. Perhaps the solution lies in the compromise between the two concepts. Or maybe not…
